“I have often thought how can any lens equal or better natures landscapes. Each and everyone is a masterpiece in its own right. A magical mix of colour, light and composition. For me, a landscape is ever changing and evolving and everyday highlights to the eye something you have not seen before. To capture all these essences in a photograph I thought was impossible. Then one day, almost a year ago, I came across a photograph called “Streams of Light” by chance and my scepticism was truly laid to rest. What made the picture more captivating was that is was a landscape in black in white. It had an ethereal quality who’s light and composition drew me back to the image time and again. It was delicate, exquisite, dainty, elegant, graceful and simply beautiful. I discovered that man behind this image was Brin Kosoff. I remember the first day I made contact with him like it was yesterday asking him that the Brett Gallery would like to represent him in the UK. As an old style gallery and studio, I suggested Brian travelled to England from Portland in the USA and we spend a week or so in the studio and see what develops. A week turned into 10 days and was the start of what has become a great friendship of kindred spirits.

Large format photography is truly an art form if undertaken in the traditional way with film as opposed to digital negatives. Like the pioneering photographers of old, until you were back in the darkroom, you were never quite sure what you have achieved. To this end, to capture a great image is about “being in the moment” which takes great patience, and an acute understanding of the elements. Brian is not content just to rely on his mastery of traditional methods. Even at 60 years of age, he is always seeking to add new skills. Where new methods or technologies can add to the content and quality of the image Brian will embrace and master these methods as well, a perfect marriage if you will of the best of the old and new. Because in the end what matters to Brian is the image and the print. I truly believe history will judge Brian Kosoff as one of the great landscape photographers of our generation. I have his witnessed his selfless drive for perfection and uncompromising approach to achieve this goal in every photograph he takes. He has a sound schooling in photography learned over some 40 years behind the lens and still has an uncompromising love for photography and continues to travel the world in pursuit of his next masterpiece.

The Brett Gallery is proud to represent Brian Kosoff exclusively in the UK. Each one of his rare, limited edition, silver gelatin photographs from his collection is available in a number of different sizes all of which are beautifully framed in-house by the gallery. We trust you will enjoy the collection as much as we have done putting it together.”

Brian Kosoff Landscape Photographer Brett Gallery

Brian Kosoff Biography

This native New Yorker, born 1957, first became interested in art through sculpture, then found his way to photography, which ultimately became his life’s work. His earliest work, produced in his teens, was primarily focused on urban landscape. Many indications of his eventual photographic style were evident then, however landscape photography would have to wait more than twenty years before he would pursue it seriously.

In his last year of high school, Kosoff worked as an intern assisting several editorials and advertising photographers. This experience would have a lasting impact on his life in that it made it clear to him that photography was his calling, but it would also send him down the path of commercial work and setting aside his personal work. While enrolled as a photography major at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Kosoff maintained an active career freelancing as a photographic assistant…
