Shamrock 4 and Shamrock 23m 1914 becalmed in the morning haze. In 1907, Sir Stuart Lipton proposed Shamrock 23m as his Challenger for the America’ Cup. However, the New York Yacht Club declined the Challenge sighting her design did not comply with the Deed of Gift which set out the rules for the Cup. Undeterred, the challenge was finally accepted with the proposed Shamrock 4. The proposed challenged was set for 1914, but postponed following the outbreak of WW1. Shamrock 4 finally met with the America’s Cup Defender Resolute in 1920 losing 3-2. This photograph, by Frank Beken, is simply exquisite, perfect in its composition and timeless in its elegance, and would make a true statement piece of art on any wall.
