Serengeti, 2019

When I pulled up next to this huge rocky outcrop in the eastern Serengeti one mid-afternoon in February, I had no idea what I would find on the rock or hidden in its crevices. I was just driving slowly around the rock when suddenly a Lioness came up to the highest boulder followed by a huge dark-maned male. She walked to the edge and stared at the horizon. I always have three camera bodies with three lenses ready on the seat next to me. I grabbed one and shot this magnificent scene right away, without even turning off the engine as there was just no time. In wildlife photography planning, patience, preparation, are all important. But sometimes you also need to react fast to unexpected encounters and situations. Moments such as this one, where animals pose so perfectly, are very fleeting and wildlife doesn’t offer second chances.
