Photographing lions is at the same time easy and difficult. It’s easy, because they are relatively common once you are in the right places, such as the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. But it’s difficult to produce unique and evocative images, because they have been photographed extensively by so many people.

Although male Lions are amazingly beautiful creatures, conveying their majesty and determination in one portrait can be quite a challenge. You need a combination of elements to come together.

On this particular morning in February of 2015, I was driving through the southern Serengeti plains, dotted by huge rocky outcrops called kopjes. There was a pride of Lions residing in the area, led by a coalition of three handsome males. I found them feeding in the long golden grass just as the sun was rising. I knew that upon finishing their meal they would soon head back to the rocks to rest in the shade. Not long after sunrise they started moving one by one. This male was one of the last to leave the kill. I waited for him in proximity of the rock and positioned so that the light would caress his face from the back. The wind often blows strong from the East in this area. His magnificent blond mane was waving as he paused to stare at something in the distance for a few seconds.
